Family Hyperiidae
Remarks
Bowman ( 1973) maintains that the diagnostic
key proposed by Bovallius (1889) to distinguish
H. dilatata from H. antarctica is based on characters that are poorly reliable. More recently,
Weigmann-Haass (1989) provided a key to identify 3 Antarctic species, H. antarctica Bovallius
1887, H. dilatata Stebbing 1888 and H. macronix
(Walker, 1906). This key allows the easy identification of H. dilatata from the two other congeneric species.
Distribution
Bowman (1973) reports the Indian sector of the
Antarctic (63°30'S, 88°57'E) as the type locality
of H. dilatata, but the species has also been sampled in the Ross Sea. More recently, WeigmannHaass (1989) considers the species as circumpolar in the Antarctic Ocean. In the Straits of Magellan, it was found only at St. 5, at the mouth of
the Pacific entrance, where it was sampled from
50-100 m.
