3.6 ]assa alonsoae Conlan, 1990
]assa alonsoae Conlan, 1990: p. 2045, fig. 13.
]assa alonsoae De Broyer and Jazdzewski,
1993: p. 59.
Body length -
female: 5.9 mm (1 specimen)
Female. Head bearing small, protruding, lateral
lobes with dorsal angle more acute. Al shorter
than A2, with very small accessory flagellum.
Gnathopod 1: basis, anterolateral margin with 1
row of short setae along its length, posterior
margin with setae only at junction with ischium;
carpus with setae at the anterodistal junction
with propodus. 2nd gnathopod larger than lst;
basis with seate on anterolateral margin; palmar
border sinuous and bearing 2 small teeth near
the dactyl insertion and 3 proxima!, short, stout
spines. lst and 2nd uropods with outer ramus
shorter than the inner. 3rd uropod with hooklike outer ramus and 2 small teeth on upper distai margin. Telson very small, triangular in
shape, with 1 small seta on either side of sharp
apex.
Family lschyroceridae
Remarks
The amphipod genus ]assa, since its description
in 1814, has caused considerable difficulty in
identification between carcinologists. On the basis of cladistic and phenetic analysis of 141 characters, Conlan (1989) concluded that the genus
]assa should comprise 19 species. ]assa alonsoae,
according to Conlan (1990), is characterized by
the combination of a setose basis of gnathopod 2,
a sinuous palm, and the presence of a setal cluster at the anterodistal junction of the carpus and
propodus on gnathopod 1.
Distribution
Conlan (1990) reports the following sampling
locations: Puerto Deseado (Southern Argentina), Tierra del Fuego (Southern Chile), Falkland
Islands, South Georgia (Tristan da Cunha), Kerguelen Island, Hauckland Islands, Macquarie
Island, The Snares Islands. Depth range, low
intertidal to 150 m. In the present study, it was
very rare and was sampled only at St. 22 from 1020m.
