3.3 Thryphosella schellenbergi
Lowry and Bullock, 1976
Tmetonyx serratus Schellenberg, 1931: p. 40, fig.
19.
Tryphosa serrata Barnard, 1962: p. 30 (key).
Thryphosella schellenbergi Lowry and Bullock,
1976: pp. 7, 108 (nom. nov.).
Body length -
female: 6.3 mm (1 specimen)
Female. Lateral lobes of head triangular and
rounded. Eyes not visible. Posterior corner of
2nd epimeral plate bearing small tooth. Posterior border of 3rd epimeral plate convex and serrated. 1st segment of urosome with pronounced
notch and with a feeble folded carina. Telson
nearly twice the width and bearing 3 strong
spines on both lobes. Epistome with triangular
extension, rounded above upper lip. 1st maxilla
with outer lobe bearing spines and inner lobe
bearing 2 spinose setules.
Remarks
T. schellenbergi can easily be distinguished from
congeneric species by the lateral lobes of the
head, which are triangular and rounded at the
tip. Other characters include the epistome, the
strongly depressed 1st segment of the urosome,
and the posterior borders of the 2nd and 3rd epimeral plates.
Distribution
Lowry and Bullock (1976) report the following
distribution for the species: Falkland Islands,
Chile, Magellanic area (Magellan Sound, Smyth
Channel, Gente Grande Bay, Bahia Inutil, Ushuaia Bay). lts vertical depth range in these areas is
reported tobe from 0-54 m. In the present study,
only a single specimen was sampled at one station in the Seconda Angostura (St. 23), where it
was found from 10-30 m.
