258 Chapter 7 Chaetognaths
Fagetti (1968) reported that the length of mature
specimens off the coast of Chile was 15-20 mm,
somewhat smaller than those in our samples.
The largest specimens were sampled at Sts. 14
and 20. Mainly immature specimens (5-7 mm)
were sampled at western stations.
Distribution
In the Atlantic Ocean, the species is distributed
in two distinct geographical areas, from 35° to
65°N and from 35° and 65°S. The species has also
been reported as sporadically present off the
coast of Morocco, carried there by the cold Canary Current (Hern~mdez and Jimenez 1993). In
the southern Atlantic, the species is also transported northward by the cold Benguela Current,
along a narrow area extending from the coast of
Africa and that of Spain. In the Pacific and Indian Oceans, it shows a sub-Antarctic distribution
delimited by the subtropical convergence (Alvarin 1969). The species has also been sampled
north of the Convergence. Lutschinger (1993)
found it off South New Zealand. Biometric studies indicate that the northern and southern Atlantic morphotypes are similar. In the Pacific
Ocean, the species is typically sub-Antarctic and
is totally lacking in the Northern Hemisphere. In
the present study, this was the only species
present throughout the Straits ofMagellan. It has
also been sampled in the Beagle Channel (Fagetti Guaita 1959). Steinhaus (1900) first reports the
presence in the Straits (Pun ta Arenas) of 8 young
specimens classified as S. serratodentata.
