216 Chapter 6 Ostracods
is remarkably similar and the hemipenis seems
nearly identica!, the size of our specimens is considerably smaller (carapace length around 0.50
mm). Another similar species is Paradoxostoma
kensleyi McKenzie 1972, described from n~ar
Ca pe Town, South Africa. Of about the same s1ze
(carapace length 0.52 mm) and with a similar
hemipenis, it differs somewhat in shape (McKenzie 1972b).
Distribution
This is the most widespread paradoxostomatid
in Antarctic nearshore waters being reported
from the Gauss Station (about 90°E), McMurdo
Sound in the Ross Sea, Elephant Island in the
South Shetlands, and Halley Bay in Coats Land
(about 27°W). Since it has also been identified as
a fossil in the Late Quaternary deposits of Watts
Lake, Vestfold Hills, Australian Antarctic Territory (Gou and Li 1985), it can be assumed that its
provenance is circum-Antarctic. Hartmann
(1986, 1987, 1989, 1990) recorded it regularly
from around Elephant Island, which is virtually
opposite the Magellan Straits across the Drake
Passage.
