6.9 Macrocypridina poulseni
Martens, 1979
Cypridina castanea Brady, 1907: p. 88, pl. 16 figs.
1-4- Miiller, 1906a: pp. 130, 131, pl. 5 figs. 1, 2,
pl. 33 figs. 11-16, pl. 34 figs. 10-13 [nec poulseni].
Cypridina (Macrocypridina) castanea Skogsberg, 1920: pp. 281-287, figs. 47-51 [nec poulseni].
Macrocypridina castanea (Brady, 1897) var. rotunda Poulsen, 1962: pp. 136-145, figs. 70-74.
Macrocypridina castanea Angel, 1981: p. 555, fig.
194/3 [partim ?].
Macrocypridina poulseni Martens, 1979: pp. 307,
308, fig. 2.
Carapace length -
females: 5.50-7.60 mm (Poulsen, 1973)
males: 4.60-6.60 mm (Poulsen, 1973)
Female (A-1). Carapace rounded-oval in lateral
view and large (4.60 mm long), with no indication of a cauda; height:length ratio about 0.75;
rostrum short, overhanging and slightly flattened on top; incisure deep and U-shaped; a
fringe of connected hyaline spines extends along
the rostrum almost to the base of the incisure,
ending in 2 hyaline spines, commences again on
the opposite side of the incisure and extends for
a short distance beyond the antero-ventral
bulge. Under the rostral margin, the infold carries 8-9 spine-like bristles forming a vertical
row, plus a clump of about 16 other bristles,
mostly subequal in length, housed in a shallow
subcircular "pocket" with a distinct inward rim,
off which and facing inwards is a single hooked
spine with a blunted tip; this clump of bristles is
located near the inner margin of the incisure;
Order Myodocopida
Planktonic Myodocopida
Family Cypridinidae
elsewhere, the infold is relatively wide anteroventrally and ventrally, but narrows posteriorly;
there is no posterior inner list, and the list below
the rostrum is bare. Selvage lamellar and narrow,
well developed antero-ventrally, ventrally and
postero-ventrally. Colour yellowish. Surface
smooth, but observed to have numerous simple
normal pores. Adductor muscle scar pattern
present medially but not well defined. Lateral
eyes large and compound, reddish, each with
about 35 ommatidia. Furca lamellar, carrying 8
claws, which decrease in strength and size from
front to rear, all separated from the lamella, every one with a row of fine sawteeth on each side
of its inner face.
Male. Carapace similar to that of the female. Al
with a strong sensory bristle bearing many filaments; 'b' and 'c' bristles having suctorial organs
on their 3 proximal filaments; 'f' and 'g' bristles
much longer than in the female and about twice
the length of the carapace. A2 stronger than that
of the female. Other limbs, the furca, upper lip,
rod-shaped organ and lateral eyes all rather similar to those of the female (Poulsen 1973). Penis
paired, proximal part large, distal process on
each side finger-shaped and bent backwards; vas
deferens unpaired (Miiller 1906a).
Remarks
This large predatory cypridinid was found only
at St. 11 in the Straits of Magellan, where there
were 6 individuals in 3 samples. Our specimens
represent an A -1 female and A-2 female ( sample
11/3), three A-3 females (sample 11/5), and a
single A-8 individual (sample 11/7). The latter is
a first free-living stage juvenile with reddish
compound lateral eyes, proportionately well-de-
