Carapace length -
females: 1.47 mm
males: 1.25 mm
Female. Carapace of medium size, rectangular;
height:length ratia about O : 60; rostrum short,
curved; incisure broad; dorsal margin straight
below the well-developed shoulders; posterodorsal edges ofboth valves slightly produced but
rounded; posterior margin convex, curving
smoothly into the ventral margin, which is weakly convex or straight. Asymmetric glands at the
usual sites; lateral corner glands present. Shell
sculpture distinct; consisting of numerous longitudinal striations tending to converge towards
the rostral region, thus producing a serrulate
margin below the incisure. Cap of the frontal organ united with the stern, thickened near its base
and smooth. Al with a long spinulose dorsal bristle; end bristles comprising a very long spinulose
'e' bristle and 4 short sensory 'pipe' bristles.
Mandible basale relatively short (generic character).
Male. Carapace shorter than that of the female
but otherwise similar, except that paired dorsomedial glands are present. Cap of the frontal organ separated by a joint from the stern, fingershaped and smooth. Al 'e' bristle adorned with a
single row of 20-22 broad-based spinules, the 'b'
and 'd' bristles almost as long and smooth, the 'c'
bristle is a short sensory 'pipe' bristle, the 'a'
bristle is short and reflexed. A2 clasping joints
strongly dimorphic; right joint with 2 basal protuberances, and 2 right-angled bends; left joint
much smaller, also with 2 basal protuberances
but recurved distally. Mandible basale relatively
short, as in the female. Penis with weakly convex
sides and a flattened top; 6-7 transverse muscle
bands; seminal tube simple, slightly thicker medially.
Remarks
This is a distinctive species, easily recognized by
its rather squat lateral profile (higher with respect to length than in most species ofthis size),
well-developed shoulders on each valve, striate
ornament, and the serrulate valve margin below
the incisure. Poulsen (1973) regards the unusually short mandibular basale as a further distinctive character.
Distribution
An gel ( 1981) considers this tobe an upper mesopelagic species found in ali Southern Hemisphere oceans. Deevey (1982) summarizes its
