able to characterize the different forms of D. elegans sufficiently for them to be consistently recognized by others working on different coliections. In our material, ovigerous females are
about 3 times as numerous as mature males in
deeper water (300-200 m) and about 6 times as
numerous as mature males near the surface ( 4020 m). We identified ali juvenile stages, except
the 2 smallest, which were too small for the mesh
of the nets used and thus escaped capture.
Distribution
With the caveat (Chavtur 1993) noted above, this
species appears to be completely cosmopolitan,
occurring in ali oceans. It ranges between about
70°N and 65°$, and has been taken at depths up
to 5190 m (Deevey 1983) although, as noted by
Hartmann (1985), it is most usualiy sampled at
less than 1000 m. As with the previous species, if
the deep water records are not of contaminants,
they may be indices for Antarctic Bottom Water
at lower latitudes.
