160 Chapter 6 Ostracods
Distribution
Angel (1981) regards this as a mesopelagic? and
transoceanic species which occurs most frequently in high latitudes. In the Atlantic, its previously known range was from 60°N to 45°S (Angel1981). Poulsen (1973) notes that it was taken
in the southern part of the Indian and west Pacific Oceans at 20-100 m depth. Deevey (1978, fig.
14) records it from the south Pacific between
about 90-160°W and from 33-54°S. Deevey
(1982) adds numerous Southern and Indian
Ocean records between about 115-165°E and
from 35-50°S; and gives its Indian Ocean latitudina~ range as from 5°N to 50°S, noting that the
speCies seems to be restricted to the upper few
hundred metres. On the other hand, Hartmann
(1985) gives the depth range as 0-2274 m. Assuming that his deep water records are not contaminants, it may be that the species moves with
Antarctic .Bottom Wate~ into more northerly
(lower) latitudes, where 1t is taken at depth.
