species but also the group phylogeny.

identification cards, copepod species have

tification. Three of the species collected
(Ischnocalanus tenuis, Oncaea mediterranea
and Euterpina acutifrons) are not reported
due to extreme paucity and heavy damage of
the available material.
The synonymy at the beginning of each
identification card is very concise and is not
intended to be exhaustive. In these, we refer
only to papers with species illustrations,
preferably taking into account more recent
publications and those which we feel are
more accessible in libraries of various marine
biology institutions.
When possible, both female and male
specimens are described, reporting only
those morphological characters which we feel
are the most useful for a rapid and precise
species identification. A somewhat longer
description is devoted to species which
present greater difficulty in their iden-
