MDS-2
Mission Demonstration Satellite (MDS) is a small satellite program to
demonstrate mission payloads. The second mission concerns the
demonstration of a Mie Scattering Lidar, which is planned to be launched in
FY 2000. The scientific objectives include the development of a high
altitude cloud (cirrus) climatology, a multiply-layered clouds climatology,
and stratospheric and tropospheric aerosols studies. This experiment would
be a precursor of ATMOS-B.

AMSR-E on EOS-PM1
AMSR-E is a microwave radiometer provided to the EOS-PM1 platform
and is similar to AMSR on ADEOS-II. The combination of ADEOS-II and
EOS-PM1 will make twice as much frequent observation possible and it will
improve the diurnal variation observation and the observation of fast
evolving phenomena such as the cloud liquid content or the water vapor in
typhoon. EOS-PM1 is planned to be launched in 2000.

PROPOSED MISSIONS
7.1
ALOS
The mission objectives of the Advanced Land Observing Satellite
(ALOS) include technology development, mapping, regional observation,
hazard monitoring and Earth resources survey. The sensors required for this
mission are a Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping
(PRISM), the Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type 2
(AVNIR-2) and Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar
(PALSAR). ALSO is planned to be launched in FY 2002. Phase B is on
going in FY 1997 and Phase C/D is anticipated to start in FY 1998.

Experiment on ISS/JEM
The Superconducting Sub-Millimeter Wave Limb Emission Sounder
(SMILES), which works at a frequency of 640 GHz, was selected for the
first experiment of new remote sensing technologies on the International
Space Station/Japan Experiment Module. The objectives of SMILES are to
make three-dimensional observations of trace gas species such as ClO, BrO,
