OPERATIONAL SATELLITES
4.1
JERS-1
JERS-1 is still operational since the launch in 1992, but in 1997 the bit
error rate of onboard Mission Data Recorder increased and the onboard data
storage function is not working reliably. However, the real-time operation
over the coverage area of ground stations is still in good condition. The
onboard sensors OPS and SAR are operational, and a large amount of data
have been archived covering world wide land area.
Recently, NASDA/EORC has been conducting research project such as
the application of SAR interferometry applied to the detection of
displacement by earthquakes, the Global Rainfall Forest Mapping and the
Global Boreal Forest Mapping.
4.2
GMS-5
The Geostationary Meteorological Satellite-5 (GMS-5) is operated by
JMA for the weather forecast application, since the launch of the first
satellite in 1977. A follow-on satellite MTSAT was planned but failed at
launch in FY 1999.

LONG TERM MISSION SCENARIO
The latest draft of Japanese scenario of long term Earth Observation
mission is the version as of 25 June 1997. However the draft will be under
discussion in FY 1997, so far, the strategy and the mission was summarized.
The basic strategy is broken into eight categories corresponding to Earth
Observation missions as the following.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Mission continuity/research oriented
Mission demonstration for application
Balanced international cooperation/research oriented
Cooperation with foreign mission
Feasibility study
Small mission for technical demonstration
Large sensor technical demonstration
Algorithm development
The following chapters briefly described particular missions.
