Chapter 28
ADEOS’ premature halt in operation affects the long term Earth science
research on seasonal or annual change data, and those practical applications
relying on near real-time data.
On the other hand, so far, the development of algorithms, calibration and
validation, as well as the generation of data sets have been well under way
and OCTS and AVNIR data are available for distribution to general users
(Please consult http://www.eorc.nasda.go.jp/ADEOS/). In the
archived data acquired during the eight months long operational period, a
large amount of Earth observations have been accumulated from these new
sensors; they need to be processed and analyzed. The National Space
Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) is now intensively processing
these data and reviewing the operation of the ground system, the research
using such data and the promotion of data use to get early results from the
Earth science or the demonstration of applications.
2.
ADEOS DATA ACQUISITION, PROCESSING AND
DISTRIBUTION
2.1
Result of operation and data acquisition
ADEOS was launched on 17 August 1996. After an initial verification of
its function, the operational phase started on 26 November 1996. Until the
end of its operation on 30 June 1997, sensors on-board ADEOS worked
almost normally, except for an abnormal tilting mechanism of OCTS which
was recovered soon, so that observational data were regularly acquired. The
total amount of data archived or planned to be archived as of 8 July were
33,014 scenes of AVNIR-MU, 19,300 scenes of AVNIR-PAN, 7408 paths
of OCTS, 4423 paths of IMG, 3433 paths of POLDER, 3340 paths of
NSCAT, 3343 paths of TOMS and 6545 paths of ILAS.
2.2
Status of data processing
The data received in NASDA’s Earth Observation Center (EOC) at
Hatoyama Japan as well as at NASA’s ground stations in Fairbanks and
Wallops, have been processed into Level 0 data at EOC and have been
distributed to each sensor provider. As of beginning of July 1997, EOC
processed OCTS, POLDER, ILAS Level 0 data of middle of April 1997.
Each sensor provider has done the Level 1 and higher level processing. At
EOC, as of 18 August 1997, the following data have been processed:
AVNIR level 0, OCTS level 0 and OCTS Real Time Coverage (RTC), and
