Chapter 27
continuation and improvement of the service provided to the worldwide
operational meteorological community.
Theme 3 – Geosphere/Biosphere:
The study and monitoring of the environment and the resources both
renewable and non-renewable on various scales from local, to regional
and to global.
Theme 4 – Atmosphere and Marine Environment:
The study and monitoring of anthropogenic impacts on the atmosphere
and marine environment (change of atmospheric composition, change of
water level, change of water quality).
It should be noted that optical remote sensing instruments have the
potential to contribute to all four of these Themes.
2.
CURRENT AND APPROVED ESA EARTH
OBSERVATION MISSIONS
The following table lists all current and approved ESA Earth Observation
missions.
METEOSAT and METEOSAT Second Generation (MSG), as well as
METOP, are missions undertaken in cooperation with EUMETSAT and
dedicated to operational meteorology. ERS-1 and its follow-on ERS-2 are
dedicated mainly to ocean/ice observations, though ERS-2 includes
capabilities for land and atmospheric chemistry investigations. ENVISAT
focuses on the observation of environment, ocean-ice and the atmosphere.
None of these are specific land observation missions but all, to varying
extents, contribute to it. Four optical terrestrial observations contributions
are made by:
ATSR on ERS-1
ATSR-2 on ERS-2
