Chapter 24
The CIGSN sites continuously monitor
solar (short-wave) radiation, downwelling and upwelling
thermal (longwave) radiation, downwelling and upwelling
land surface temperature
air temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind speed at 2 and 15 m above
the surface.
During campaigns the following variables are measured:
directional spectral radiance
tropospheric temperature and moisture profiles
visible and thermal upwelling radiances from aircraft.
Aerosol optical depth and water vapor column amount are monitored
continuously at Uardry and during campaigns at Amburla.
3.
SITE UNIFORMITY
Both CIGSN sites were chosen for their high spatial uniformity over
several square kilometers so that ground-based measurements would be
representative of the area covered by a 1-km satellite pixel. Furthermore, the
Uardry site was placed on the largest plain in Australia in the expectation
