19. REMOTE SENSING OF ALBEDO USING THE BRDF IN
RELATION TO LAND SURFACE PROPERTIES

image, and the known location of cities and other human activity affecting
the natural vegetation cover.
The findings indicate that the angular dependence of land surface
reflectance may perhaps be utilized to investigate surface properties such as
LAI through volume scattering or surface roughness through shadow casting
effects in a semi-empirical way, whether directly through the ratio of albedo
or reflectance at various angles, or indirectly through mappings of
empirically rescaled model parameters. We therefore propose that these
experimental results suggest that further inquiry into this area of research is
warranted. The benefits could be substantial if techniques are successfully
developed.
