Whitehouse, B.G., and D. Hutt, Ocean Intelligence in the Maritime Battlespace: the Role of Spaceborne
Sensors and HF Radar, Canadian Military Journal, Vol 5(1), 2004, 35-42.
9. Appendix
The following reference information is provided in support of Tables 1 through 4:
Superscripts
1. Sensor type (C)ommercial, (Met)eorology, (T)ransitional, (Mil)itary, (R)esearch/development. Commercial
satellites are owned or otherwise operated by private companies. R & D satellites are usually owned by space
agencies. All listed Meteorology and Military satellites are owned by public agencies and meet a prescribed
operational requirement. Transitional sensors are considered by the authors to be in a transition phase –
progressing from research and development tools to satellites of another category. See text for additional
discussion. Where a satellite program involves a series of satellites, the tables only list relevant sensors
mounted on the latest satellite in the series.
2. The sensor’s revisit time refers to either the satellite’s orbit recycle time or the sensor’s effective revisit
time (identified with a “~”) at mid-latitudes. Revisit time varies with latitude and sensor configuration.
3. Near-real time refers to satellite data that can be delivered to the user within two hours of satellite overpass.
