Glossary
designated period of time; this quota can be bought and sold among
individuals.
Interspecific relation between organisms of different species.
Intraspecific relation between individuals within a species.
Keystone species a prominent species whose removal would cause
drastic changes in the abundance of other species in a food web; removal of a keystone species may lead to extinction and eventual collapse of a community.
Law of mass action description of the relation between reactants and
products of chemical reactions.
Liebig's law of the minimum states that the growth rate of an organism
is limited by the necessary resource that is least abundant.
Limit Cycle oscillation of prey and predator populations when influence
of positive and negative feedbacks on the populations is in balance.
Linear a relation of direct proportionality.
Logistic growth a model used to describe intraspecific competition; this
model assumes continuous birth and death rates for a population in
which competition exists between members of the same species .
Macronutrients minerals that a plant requires in high quantities for
growth (e.g. phosphorous, nitrogen, sulfur).
Marginal cost the cost incurred by using or producing one more unit of
a good or service.
Marine protected area an oceanic area delineated and regulated by a
government with the intent of preserving organisms and habitat.
Metapopulation distinct populations connected as a larger group by migration of individuals.
Mobile fishing gear equipment such as trawls and dredges deployed
from a vessel; must be in motion to catch fish.
Module a group of cells that forms the original unit of growth in modular organisms; growth in this type of organism occurs through the accumulation of units, rather than an increase in the number of cells composing a unit; also: submodel of a larger model.
Mortality Rate the number of deaths per population per unit of time.
Multispecies Fishery fishing effort distributed among a variety of fishes,
rather than focused on one species.
Negative feedback in a system of interactive components, the action of
one component results in a destimulation of the initial component,
thereby inhibiting the action .
Nonlinear-a relation of no direct proportionality.
Nutrient loading accumulation of nutrients in water bodies as a result of
chemical run-off.
Oligopoly power divided among a few individuals or parties ; market setting in which a few actors (individuals , firms, households, communities)
have noticeable influence on market outcome.
