Glossary
Competition a duel between organisms for resources such as mates,
food, space, water or sunlight.
Control variable represents an influence on the change in a state variable.
Damped oscillation popul ation fluctuations that gradually diminish to a
state of equilibrium; occurs in pop ulations wherein there is a time-lag
between resource availability or population den sity and the effect of
these conditions on rep roductive rate.
Descriptive Modeling hypothetical data used as inpu ts in a model with
the intent of show ing trends and possible changes in a system, rather
than precise outcomes, under the influence of certain variables.
Demersal refers to a organism, or life history stage, that exists on or near
the sea floor.
Diatom a unicellular organism that lives in the ocea n and is capable of
photosynthesis.
Difference equation an equation used to rep resent the growth of a population betwe en two discrete points in time; is used with popul ations
having a distinct, rather than continuous, breeding season.
Differential equation an equation used to represent change over (continuous) time.
Dinoflagellate a unicellular organism that lives in the ocean and is capable of photosynth esis.
Early Benthic Phase life history stage in which pelagic larvae/ juveniles
settle to the sea floor.
EI Niiio wea ther event in the southeas t Pacific Ocea n occurring every 3-7
years; is characterized by heavy and frequent rainfall; results when the
warm, northwest EI Nino current temporarily shifts towards the south to
displace the cold, southern Peruvian current.
Endogenous occurring within a system.
Epibionts organisms that live attache d to another organism or substrate.
Error from Spatial Boundary Assumption error resulting from failure
to capture entire system within a specified boundary (see Error of Inappropriate Spatial Specification).
Error of an Inappropriate Order of Execution error resulting from the
order in which a model calculates changes in system pa rameters.
Error of Drawing Inappropriate Conclusions error resulting from the
inappropriate extension of model results.
Error of Exclusion model error resulting from exclusion of an important
system com ponent in the model.
Error of Extrapolation error resulting from application of model data to a
spatial or tempo ral scale that is different from the scale at which the data
was collected (see Error of Interp olation).
Error of Inappropriate Choice of DT error resulting from the selection of a model DT that is not appro priate to the type of system being
modeled.
