the population sizes are still unknown, captive culture systems would nonetheless
benefit nautiluses. Perhaps the best line of research is to investigate the initial mechanism of captive mating to begin promoting that aspect of reproduction in captivity.
Consistent mating in captivity would enable researchers to identify the mechanisms
behind the proceeding steps of reproduction, thereby increasing the likelihood of
successful culture systems.
Acknowledgments The authors would like to thank the LIBE, BCR, and AREAC members for
their husbandry support throughout the years. The authors would also like to thank John Apolinski, Jean Boal, Bruce Carlson, Paul DiMarco, Frank Grasso, Philip Lee, Heike Neumeister,
Janice Simmons, Roxanna Smolowitz, and Peter Ward for all of their advice throughout the years.
Thanks also go to Karen Keister and the anonymous reviewers for their insightful comments on
the manuscript.
