Treatment Plants for Phosphorus Removal from Wastewater
Fig 10.21 Infiltration plant in Viols-le-For! (Provence, France). Notice the maquis* in the
background. In ancient times there were big forests here which were destroyed by
unrestrained cutting. (*maquis is a type of vegetation that is composed of low shntbs
with hard drought-resistance).
Design based on total phosphorus
A quick- but rather unreliable - method to determine the process conditions for a
given, required effluent concentration of total phosphorus is based on leaving out
separate calculations for dissolved and suspended phosphorus.
Table 10.2 states relevant methods to obtain given total phosphorus concentrations
and the associated metal ion dosings and requirements of pH, if any.
In the literature, we can find a number of examples illustrating the total phosphorus
of the effluent as a function of the molar ratio. Fig 10.22 gives examples of simultaneous precipitation. The phosphorus removal in a 2-media (plastics/sand) contact
filter with iron and aluminium precipitations is shown in Tables 10.3 and 10.4.
