Types of plants for nitrification
Fig 6.19 Traditional rock trickling plant where nitrification can occur in periods of low load
and high temperature. The Hammel wastewater treatment plant, 1977 (Denmark).
At small load, the traditional rock trickling filter as shown in Fig 6.19 can be brought
to nitrify. The degree of nitrification is often limited and is clearly affected by the
temperature dependency of the biological processes as shown in Fig 6.20, where
annual variations in the nitrification at the Lundtofte treatment plant is shown.
German literature /6/ recommends the following to achieve nitrification when
treating municipal wastewater (definitions, Chapter 5, Section 5.7):
Rock trickling filters:
Bv =200 g BOD/(m 3 . d)
BA,V = 0.4-0.8 m/h
R::s;1
Trickling filters with plastics media:
BA =2 g BOD/(m 2 · d)
BA,v = 0.6-1.5 m/ h (100< ro <200m 2 /m 3 )
R::s;1
Rotating disc filters:
BA = 4-5 gBOD/ (m 2 · d)
