elsewhere, are increasingly facing several
anthropogenic stresses. Thus, the rapidly
expanding human population; large-scale
changes in land use, land covers; burgeoning
development projects and improper use of
watersheds; etc., have all caused a substantial
decline of wetland resources of the country.
23. The present rate of loss of wetlands in India
could lead to serious consequences, particularly, with regard to their signifi cant role in
sustaining c 74 % of the rural population in
India.
24. One of the long-standing needs for conservation of the wetland biodiversity in the country is to comprehensively prioritise them.
25. Wetland conservation is a very important issue
in the globe today in view of burgeoning
urbanisation vis-a-vis wetland dereliction.
26. The Government of India has been having
ongoing programmes on wetland conservation
including the action plan in collaboration
with the provinces.
27. Capacity building is an important aspect for
effective conservation. No conservation
activity is, perhaps, possible without trained
manpower.
28. Community participation is an important
aspect of wetland management and conservation . The livelihood of the local (riparian)
people is dependent on the wetlands. As such,
no decision making could be considered as
complete without the participation of the
local people.
