recorded from these wetlands. Amongst the
plants, 80 species are AM. Some of the AM are
Ipomoea, Polygonum, Hydrilla, Vallisneria,
Ottelia, Typha, Eichhornia, Potamogeton,
Cyperus, Echinochloa, etc. Some of the fi shes are
Ompok, Rasbora, Puntius, Labeo, Chela, Mystus,
Barilius, Cirrhinus, Aspidoparia, Danio,
Mastacembelus, Chanda, etc. Amongst the birds,
85 % are migratory. About 1,500 waterfowls are
sometimes recorded in these wetlands.
Large-scale harvest of AM for fodder and
extensive fi shing are some of the threats to these
wetlands. Nevertheless, the wetland was declared
as a ‘bird sanctuary’ in 1980. But declaration as a
‘non-hunting area’ would, perhaps, boost conservation of these wetlands. Moreover, eradication of
weeds and afforestation would possibly render this
wetland as a more suitable habitat for the biota
