water’. The lake has a maximum length (km),
breadth (km), depth (m) and area (ha) of 0.64,
0.43, 9.0 and 16.0, respectively. The lake has a
single outlet having hillocks around. It receives
water mainly from the surrounding catchment.
There was a thick forest around the lake
surroundings with overdrouping of tree branches
over the lake water, thus preventing penetration of
sunlight. The colour of lake water appeared blackish which could be due to the much deposits of
humus being drained into the lake from the catchment. Piscicultural programme was started during
1976–1977 when the lake was stocked with IMCs.
The lake was reclaimed during 1978–1979 with
thinning of the jungle around. The Ganga Lake is
a habitat for some of the wetland birds fl ying from
India to China and other parts of SE Asia. The
lake had not been a victim of severe eutrophication unlike many wetlands in NE India.
The lentic bodies of Arunachal Pradesh have
been further dealt with in Chap. 6 .
20.2.15 Wetlands of Nagaland
The province of Nagaland has a number of lentic
bodies, many of which are not much disturbed
mainly because of their remoteness. A brief
account of some of the lentic bodies of Nagaland
is given below:
20.2.15.1 Shilloi Lake
Shilloi Lake (Plate 20.64 ) is a natural lake in the
valley surrounded with pine forest and has interesting landscape. It is an ideal place for adventure
and tracking. The locals call it Latsam, the British
called it Shiloh, but now it is offi cially known as
Shilloi. The lake is also known as the Lachem
Lake. It lies on the lower slopes of the hill ranges
running along the Myanmar border. Its area
ranges from 0.25 to 0.30 km
2 depending on the
season. The lake has the shape of a footprint. The
water of the lake is usually dark grey. The lake is
situated at a distance of c 275 km away from
Kohima. The serpentine road spiraling downwards guarded by Rocky Mountains presents a
mysterious and majestic sight.
20.2.15.2 Dzudu Lake (Zanibu Peak)
Zanibu is a mountain range, which is an extension of Patkai range. It is the longest mountain
range in Nagaland. This mountain range is encircled by about 10 Chakhesang villages. The
mountain has evergreen/virgin tropical rainforest
with a rich diversity of plants and animals. A big
lake (in fact it is a natural dam) stretches nearly
