are Notopterus notopterus, Esomus danricus,
Amblypharyngodon mola, Puntius sarana, P. ticto,
Mystus bleekeri, etc. A BDC takes care of the Beel.
Developmental activities are yet to start. However,
the fringe area is encroached for cultivation and
fi sh culture. Air-breathing fi shes and common
birds are usually seen in the Beel. There is possibly no record of migratory birds. Natural biodiversity of wetland is dwindled possibly due to
habitat degradation.
Some of the suggested measures are as
follows:
(a) Civil works may be done for raising the Beel
shore.
(b) It is good to deweed and desilt the entire Beel.
(c) Both the feeding channels are to be maintained for replenishing fi sh stocks through
autostocking.
(d) Agricultural run-off to be prevented.
(e) Encroached fringe areas may be converted to
culture ponds.
20.2.6.6 Multichora Beel
This wetland (Beel) is situated at 89° 52′ E and
26° 24′ N in Kokhrajar District of Assam. The
area of the Beel is 27.3 ha, while its maximum
and minimum depths are 2 m and 1 m, respectively, infested mainly with water hyacinth and
red water lily. Major AM species are Eichhornia
crassipes, Enhdra fl uctuans, Euryale ferox, Trapa
natans, L. var. bispinosa, Salvinia sp., Nymphaea
sp., Cyperus sp., Polygoum sp., etc. Some of the
fi shes of the Beel are Notopterus notopterus,
Puntius spp., Esomus danricus, Anabas testudineus, Clarias batrachus, Channa spp., Wallago
attu and Mystus spp. River Sonkosh is the main
connecting channel. The Beel shore is used for
farming and grazing. A big part of the Beel area
is encroached by local people. Fishing is generally done on a large scale at DSL through leasing.
BDC is being constituted. Common air-breathing, carnivorous fi shes and common waterbirds
are found. The Beel water generally has temperature 24 °C (air), 23 °C water, pH 6.5, DO 7.2 mg/l,
FCO 2 6 mg/l and TH 10 mg/l.
Some of the suggested measures are as follows:
(a) The Beel could be developed for aquaculture.
(b) Channel fl ow to be retained for natural desiltation
and autostocking.
(c) Small fi shing centres could be for aquaculture.
(d) No infl ow of agricultural run-off.
20.2.6.7 Pabong Beel
This rectangular rainfed Beel (wetland) is situated in Megela village under Saikhowa Devt.
Block in Tinsukia District of Assam, about 75 km
from the Tinsukia town. The area of the Beel is
39 ha at FSL and 14 ha at DSL, while its maximum and minimum depths are 1.5 m and 0.5 m,
respectively. It is a closed completely weedinfested (by water hyacinth, colocasia, etc.). Beel
with no river connection. The centre of the Beel
is silted. Also, a big portion of the Beel is
encroached for agriculture and grazing. The Beel
water generally has temperature 22 °C (air),
20 °C (water), pH 5.6, DO 10 mg/l, FCO 2 3.2 mg/l
and TH 6 mg/l. Some of the AM are Eichhornia
crassipes, Trapa natans L. var bispinosa,
Hydrilla verticillata, Cyperus sp., Sagittaria sagittifolia, Salvinia cucullata, Euryale ferox,
Enhydra fl uctuans, Polygonum spp., Colocasia
sp., Nymphaea spp., etc. Further, some of the fi sh
species of this Beel are Notopterus notopterus,
Amblypharyngodon mola, Clarias batrachus,
Puntius spp., Heteropneustes fossilis, Channa
spp., Amphipnous cuchia, etc. Birds, such as cormorant and cranes, are seen in the Beel.
Constitution of a BDC is under various stages of
processing. In addition, some of the NGOs are
also associated in different types of activities in
the Beel. The major part of the Beel encroached
for agricultural activities and grazing.
Some of the suggested measures are as
follows:
(a) Aquaculture in the Beel.
(b) Desiltation of the Beel.
(c) Beel shore be raised for retention of water.
(d) Only organic farming be allowed.
(e) Pisciculture may invite more birds into the
Beel.
20.2.6.8 Bhelaimari Beel
This Beel is situated in Narayanpur circle of
