15.5.5.2 Fish Diversity in Sat Beel
of Assam
Fourteen species of fi shes belonging to 12 genera, 6 families and 3 orders have been recorded in
Sat Beel.
15.5.5.3 Fish Diversity in Chatla Haor
of Assam
Fifty-seven species of fi shes, belonging to 28
genera, 17 families and 9 orders, have been
recorded in Chatla Haor. For details of fi shes of
Chatla Haor, the reader may refer to Chap. 20 .
Zoogeographically, the ichthyospecies of
Chatla Haor contains 79.62 % of primary FW
fi sh, while the rest (20.38 %) belong to the
peripheral class (Nichols 1928 ; Darlington
1957 ; Kar 1990 ). Further, on the basis of Indian
and Extra-Indian territorial fi sh distributional
pattern (Motwani et al. 1962 ), ichthyospecies
of Chatla Haor did contain fi shes belonging to
the groups called ‘widely’ distributed species
(notably Puntius, Ompok, Channa, Anabas )
and species of northern India (notably Botia
dario, Lepidocephalichthys guntea, etc.).
Ecomorphologically (Dey 1973 ), fi sh species
of Chatla Haor contain only the ‘semi-torrential’ forms and the ‘plain water’ forms (notably
A. mola, C. catla, C. carpio, Puntius spp.,
Mystus spp.).
15.5.5.4 Fish Diversity in Puneer Haor
of Assam
The Puneer Haor contains altogether 24 species
of fi shes belonging to 22 genera, 15 families and
8 orders (Kar 1998 ; Laskar et al. 2002 ).
15.5.5.5 Fish Diversity in the Oxbow
Wetlands (‘Anuas’) of Assam
In Rupairbala Anua
Twenty-four species of fi shes belonging to 21
genera, 15 families and 9 orders have been
recorded in this Anua (Kar 1998 ; Kar et al. 2000b ).
In Baskandi Anua
Thirteen species of fi shes belonging to ten genera,
six families and four orders have been recorded in
Baskandi Anua. For details of fi shes of Baskandi
Anua, the reader may refer to Chap. 20 .
In Fulbari Anua
In course of a pilot survey, seven species of fi shes
belonging to six genera, six families and six
orders have been recorded from Fulbari Anua
(Kar 1998 ; Kar et al. 2000b ).
In Sibnarayanpur Anua
Twenty-two species of fi shes belonging to 21
genera, 10 families and 5 orders have been
recorded from Sibnarayanpur Anua (Kar 1998 ;
Kar et al. 2000b ).

(NC) Hills (Dima Hasao District) and Lumding
Region of Assam:
A consolidated inventory of major fi sh fauna
found in NC Hills and Lumding Region of Assam
is given below. The list has been prepared through
preliminary surveys conducted in the abovementioned regions during 1996–1998 (Kar 1998 ):
In NC Hills, the fi shes have been collected
