world as per the information which was available
in August 2003. Panch Pokhari at 5,494 m MSL
is about 700 m in length and 400 m in width;
while the length and breadth of Panch Pokhari at
5,414 m MSL is about 1.6 km and 500 m,
respectively.
Cholamu Lake (Sikkim)
Cholamu Lake (Chola Mu Lake), lying at
5,486 m MSL in Sikkim, India, is the source of
the river Teesta (Tista). The lake is near Donkiala
Pass, which is situated at 18,500 ft.
Gurudongmar Lake (Sikkim)
This lake lies at 17,400 ft MSL as seen in a web
page furnished with by one Niladri Mukherjee,
originally from Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal,
India (now located in New Jersey, USA).
According to Himalayan Travel Trade Journal,
this lake is situated at an altitude of 5,074 m
MSL. Arun from Bangalore, India, had reported
that there is a sign by Gurudongmar Lake listing
the elevation at 17,100 ft MSL. Gurudongmar
and Cholamu Lakes are in a sensitive border area
at Sikkim between India and China.
Orba Co Lake (Tibet)
Orba Co Lake, lying at 5,209 m MSL, is situated
in Tibet. It is notable also for containing a number of islands. These so-called Island Superlatives
are, possibly, the highest islands in the world
(Josh Calder). Also, according to ‘Wit and
Wisdom’, Lake Orba Co is said to contain the
highest island in the world. Further, about 3/4 of
the lake’s surface of Orba Co Lake is said to be
covered with ice. In this connection, it may be
noted that there are web pages from X-SAR
Mission X2 containing slides of remote sensing
data near Xizang Zizhiqu in the Himalayas.
Laguna Glaciar Lake (Bolivia)
Laguna Glaciar Lake, lying at 5,038 m MSL, is a
glacial lake near Sorata in Bolivia. The lake is
said to have gained in size during the last 50 years
due to the warming climate in that area. Bo
Loevschall of Denmark, perhaps, contributed
much for bringing this lake to light.
Imja Glacier Lake (Nepal)
Imja Lake, lying at 5,010 m MSL, is formed by
glacial melting, but it did not even exist in 1960.
There are possibilities of fl ash fl oods being
caused by this lake. Some organisations are said
to be working to prevent an outburst fl ood on
Imja Lake, in order to protect downstream
populations.
Lake Ccascana (Peru)
Laguna Ccascana, lying at 4,920 m MSL, is situated to the northeast of Lake Sibinacocha but is
much smaller than the latter. Both lakes are situated in the Ausangate trekking circuit east of
Cuzco in Peru. It could be reached by a trek
through the Vilcanota range in Peru.
Lake Tilicho (Nepal)
The Lake Tilicho is said to be situated at 4,919 m
MSL in Nepal.
Suraj Tal Lake (HP, India)
The Suraj Tal Lake, lying at 4,883 m MSL, is
situated in the province of Himachal Pradesh in
India. This lake is located just below the summit
of Baralacha pass. The river Bhaga originates
from this lake. One of the most adventurous roads
in the world, Manali to Leh and Ladakh, passes
along the side of this lake.
Lake Sibinacocha (Peru)
The Lake Sibinacocha , lying at 4835 m MSL, is
situated in the Ausangate Mountain in Peru. The
lake has a length and breadth of 15 km and 2 km,
respectively. Dr. Hillary Hamann at Colorado
College did high altitude research on the
Sibinacocha watershed: another lake, called Lake
Laguna Ccascana, is said to exist at an elevation
of 4,930 m MSL.
Lake Manasarovar (Tibet)
Lake Manasarovar, lying at 4,727 m MSL, is
one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world
(NASA).
Lake Namtso (Tibet)
The Lake Namtso, lying at 4,718 m MSL (alternatively 4,700 m MSL) in Tibet (China), is said
