Groundwater Management Strategies to Improve Surface Water

moderate changes of the boundary conditions can achieve significant
improvements for the dynamics of the Alte Donau. The suitable area for growth of
water plants can be increased by 25 to 100%, depending on the scenario.

Fig. 12. Hydrographs of Alte Donau and Neue Donau for management scenario 4, with
modified operation of Neue Donau and additional surface withdrawal in Alte Donau
7 Summary and Conclusions
The objective of this study was to identify and assess water management
alternatives for the Alte Donau to improve its water quality. A hydrological
analysis indicated that the boundary conditions of the interacting groundwater
system had been changed substantially. As a consequence, the exchange of surface
water and groundwater was reduced.
It could be shown that an integrated water management approach should
consider the surface water and the groundwater regime in both quantity and
quality. Further, the buffering capacity of the littoral and submersed macrophytes
plays an important role in the nutrient balance.
Alternative management schemes are identified and a long term concept is
proposed which is based on a Leitbild concept for the riparian groundwater
regime.
Acknowledgments. Research for the case study Alte Donau was performed under
contract and support of the municipality of the city of Vienna.
