Watcr In Ecosystems: A Non Renewable Resource
data / information processing tool kit including graphical and statistical
tools;
knowledge bases (methodologies, problem-oriented guidelines and
educational tools).
A simulation/forecasting system including a library of complementary predictive
modeling tools and a framework for model application support is being
developed. The modeling systems library will encompass various kinds of models
adapted to various processes (water movement, sediment transport, fate of
contaminants, socio-economy, ... ), to various physical compartments (groundwater,
surface waters, overall continental water cycle, ... ), with competing but
complementary techniques (deterministic or stochastic, mechanistic or
conceptual, ... ) .
The computerized framework for information, data and knowledge management
and the simulation/forecasting system will be integrated in an overall Information
and Decision-Support System (ISMAP/IDSS). The content of the IDSS is
presented in more detail in [1] and [4].
An originality of ISMAP is that, in addition to model developments, the emphasis
will be placed on the following components of environment modeling:
elaboration of guidelines for sound applications of models in
accordance with relevant classes of operational objectives;
advisable modeling strategies (appropriate scenarii and spatial
descriptions) aimed at rationalizing model exploitation;
model calibration and validation procedures;
• tentative assessment of results, errors and uncertainties induced by data
scarcity and model inadequacies.
The development of appropriate methodologies for vulnerability and risk
mapping is under way. The appropriate tools will be available in the Information
and Decision Support System, and the methodologies will be integrated in a
knowledge base [3].
4.5 Test-site applications
The methodologies and tools developed under ISMAP will be tested on fifteen
test-sites located in France and Italy. These sites cover various aspects of the
problem (chemicals, agricultural practices, site conditions), various space scales
(from farm to watershed), various objectives (water resource protection, research
investigations) .
A Steering Committee has been constituted on each test site, involving local
authorities and farmers in order to define and follow the local operational
objectives of ISMAP tests and demonstrations.
