Accessing Geoenvironmental Data: From On-line to Expert Systems

COMMUNICATIONS WITH AND WITHIN RUSSIA
RELATED TO PLANETARY GEOPHYSICS
Most important in this area are initiatives of NASA, ESA and other agencies in
expanding Internet to Russia. Russian Space Science Internet (RSSI) managed by
Space Research Institute (IKI), Russian Academy of Sciences provides important
opportunities to both users and developers of Russian scientific information
systems.
The Geophysical Center participates in these activities by installing a dedicated
link to the RSSI node at IKI and managing the WDCB domain of Internet.
The WDCB domain includes Sun-3 based Local Area Network of Ethernet type
(WDCBnet). WDCBnet serves WDCB and EDNES branch users and is the host for
GOLDIS, Version 2. At the moment WDCB net is connected via dedicated links to
RSSI (14.4 Kbaud) and to IASNET (9.6 Kbaud) (Fig. 1).
The Institute for Automated Systems (lAS) under agreement with Geophysical
Center supports transparent access to WDCBnet from IASNET public telephone
concentrators installed in Moscow and several big cities in Russia.

DGGGMS INFORMATION NETWORK (GEONET)
In June 1993 the Department of Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry and Mining
Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences launched an initiative establishing
the DGGGMS non-commercial computer-based information network to ensure
access of both Russian and foreign users to information of scientific institutions of
the Department as well as to international information resources in Earth sciences.
GEONET will include not only academic institutes but institutions of other
agencies as well (e.g. Roskomnedra). It is planned that the network will provide
access to most important national and international information systems.
It is further planned to obtain the necessary level of standardization of hard- and
software used at the network as well as standardization of model description and
data and metadata formats, using recommendations of the WDC System and the
CEOS Working Group on Data.
Figure 2 shows a structure of the DGGGMS Information Network with main links
between institutes participating in the project and in international networks.
One of the first steps of the GEONET project was to create the list of information
resources handled by the participating institutes. The list contains over 100 items,
each representing factographic or documentary data bases of scientific interest.
Unfortunately an essential part of these data are not in computer readable form.
DGGGMS now seeks financial support from national and international
foundations to digitize the most interesting data and make them easily accessible
to the national and international scientific community.
