Figure 1. Statistics of the use of the National Science Foundation network (NSFNET).
The "gopher" system has also had great popularity in recent years. Gopher servers
provide hierarchical menus to reach needed information. These are interconnected
to each other through multiple links and ultimately lead to various services such as
data access or image display. Again, there is a problem of knowing which routes to
take to reach particular data or information needed.
For this reason the "Veronica" software was developed to allow free text searching
through information about the gopher servers registered throughout the network.
The information on where to go can be determined quickly if the gopher is
registered properly . The Veronica system, however, does not allow searching of
the contents of the data or information that one ultimately reaches. For this reason
the Wide Area Information Servers (W AIS) have gained in popularity.
The W AIS system is composed of a number of servers on which textual documents
are contained. All of the documents on each server have been processed so that all
of the words in the documents are indexed. The user can then make free text searches matching query words against the indexes of selected servers. Documents are
given a numeric ranking based on the abundance, proximity, location, etc. of query words. The user then gets a listing of the applicable documents in ranked order.
