OEMSlWater programme is a multi-faceted water science progrOJtlItle oriented towards understanding
freshwater quality issues throughout the world. Major activities include monitoring, assessment, and
clIlacity building. The implementation of the OEMSlWater progrOJtlItle involves several United Nations
agencies active in the water sector as well as a number of organizations around the world.
Textual information and access to selected database items covering the period 1979 - 1990 are
accessible via theGEMSIWaler Gopher.
On-line information systems and databases are now available on the Internet. Among others,
the Canada Centre for Inland Waters (CCIW) is one of the world's leading centres for water
research, generating environmental information and knowledge about ecosystems. These servers
host information from the UNEP GEMS Collaborating Centre for Freshwater Monitoring and
Assessment Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network, the Annotated Digital Atlas of
Global Water Quality and an electronic document presenting information and findings on 82
major watersheds of the world that selectively summarizes data contributed by countries
participating in the GEMS/w A TER Programme over the period 1976 - 1990. The servers can
be consultated on Internet at location: http://www.cciw.ca
