Space and Earth Remote Sensing: GIS Application to Environmental Impact Studies
The original cost estimate by UNDP/WHO based solely on a tunnel construction
for the water transfer could thus well be reduced by one third, provided a channel,
pipeline and a few short tunnels will be used along the optimal route detected,
local labour employed and local building material used on-site.
The research work for this case study utilized several GIS tools of ARC/INFO V6.1
on workstation IBM RISC 6000 Model 530; for image processing ERDAS 7.4 was
used on IBM/RS 6000, and for geographic analysis, combination, visualization and
map production ARC/INFO V6.1. The image integration functions of ARC/INFO
were utilized to integrate the results of image processing modules in ERDAS 7.4
on the workstation; the combination of these two softwares provided a powerful
tool.
The raster-processing GRID of ARC/INFO was used to display and merge large
raster datasets, and to perform complex spatial analysis on raster data.
