humpback singers produce sounds in the 20–30-Hz band. It remains to be
determined whether these infrasonic singers are older, larger, or more successful breeders than noninfrasonic singers. Another recent observation for
humpback singers is that there is as much as a threefold difference in song
intensity, a difference that would have profound differences in detection
range and therefore audience (Clark unpublished).
12. Acoustic Signaling in Teleost Fishes
12.1. Signal Parameters
Sound production and the underlying sound-producing mechanisms, both
neural and mechanical, have been identified widely among distantly related
groups of teleost fishes, suggesting that it has been independently evolved

Figure 2.7. Schematic diagram illustrating differences in four baleen whale song
features, where two of the species, humpback and bowhead, are coastal singers and
two others, blue and fin, are deep ocean singers. Inter–note interval is the time in
seconds between adjacent song elements, and time-bandwidth product, a dimensionless unit, is the product of element duration and bandwidth.
