Issues related to captive management have lost ground in the Latin American
context (Fig. 1.5). However, works directed to conservation, tourism, environmental
education, development of new research methods and new test equipment are on the
rise and increasingly occupying the researchers’ interest.
Ten years after the first Latin American meeting of experts in aquatic mammals,
the first panorama seemed to be changing. Rosas et al. (1994), Corcuera and Cornejo
(1994) and Simões-Lopes (2006) performed an assessment of the period and found
that the most immediate topics such as stranding records, casual sightings at sea and
distribution expansions were giving way to more elaborate studies both in the field
and in the laboratory. However, if we consider a more extended period as the reported
