For example, damage to parts of the myocardium will result
in compromised cardiac function and reduced output.
Remaining and intact cardiomyocytes will therefore have to
compensate for this insufficiency by hypertrophy and
hyperplasia, often accompanied by grossly enlarged
cardiomyocyte nuclei (compensatory hypertrophy) (Fig. 4.8).
