Dark grey above, black below. Males adult at 29-42 cm,
females adult at 34-50 cm. Off Natal below 200 m; wideranging from Tanzania east to Japan and Australasia, and
off the east coast of South America. Apparently often confused with E. brachyurus.

Dark grey-brown above and below, flank markings only
just visible. Skin smooth compared to that of other species
in this genus. Off Natal males mature at 31 cm, but western
Atlantic males are immature at 39 cm and females immature at 47 cm. In our area trawled in 274 - 421 m off
Natal; also recorded from both sides of the Atlantic as well
as Japan and New Zealand.
