The maximum parsimony trees were obtained using the Branch and
Bound algorithm. Bootstrap proportions were obtained from 1000
replicates.
Results
Enzymatic variability
The allelic frequencies and the values of observed and expected
heterozygosity are given in Table 1. Since many labile enzymes tended to
denature due to variable quality of the samples, there are some missing
data (corresponding to 4.9% of question marks in the NEXUS data matrix
ofPAUP).
By using the intraspecific and intrasubsample Fis, plus intersubsample
Fst, a clear heterogeneity appears at the intraspecific level for
Chionodraco myersi and Neopagetopsis ionah. Values of estimated Fis
and Fst are available upon request to the corresponding author.
1) In Chionodraco myersi, four populations are concerned: pop. 6:
Weddell Sea - Cape Norvegia; 71°06,2'S; 012°53,8'W, 771 m depth, 10
indo + pop. 7: Weddell Sea - Cape Norvegia, 71°12,0'S; 013°14,0'W; 402
m; 13 indo + pop. 8: Weddell Sea - Halley Bay, 75°09,1 'S; 027°34,7'W;
407 m; 30 indo + pop. 9: Prydz Bay, 301 m; 6 indo
2) In Neopagetopsis ionah, there is a significant differentiation between
two populations: pop. 3: Weddell Sea, 74°36,5'S; 029°41,2'W; 799 m; 24
indo + pop. 4: Prydz Bay, 300 m; 7 indo
Phylogenetic reconstructions
The species Chionobathyscus dewitti, Dacodraco hunteri and
Pseudochaenichthys georgian us were removed from the analyses because
they were represented by only one individual, the reliability of the data
being not established.
The neighbor - joining tree is given in Fig. 1. Note that the clade
(Channichthys (Chaenocephalus, Cryodraco» is well supported by a long
internal branch. Also are the successive basal positions of
Champsocephalus and Neopagetopsis.
The Branch and Bound search yielded two equally parsimonious trees
of 66 steps, differing by the position of Chionodraco rastrospinosus. The
tree (Fig. 2) is the strict consensus of these two Dollo parsimony trees,
with the bootstrap proportions above 50%. The consistency index (CI) is
0,591 and the retention index (RI) is 0.757.
