Concluding Remarks
Atrial natriuretic peptides are generally considered to be regulators of body
fluid volume and electrolyte balance, and to control hemodynamics in
vertebrates. Studies on natriuretic peptides from the eel indicate that they
play a role in the adaptations to different enviromental salinities and
cardiovascular activity. Antarctic teleosts are very specialized fishes and
atrial natriuretic peptides may be essential for their survival in their extreme
environment. Further work is necessary to characterize the molecular
sequence of the peptides, and the affinity and structure of the receptor
subtypes. The administration of homologous ANPs may clarify the
physiological role played by this family of peptides in the different
environmental and hemodynamic conditions encountered by the Antarctic
teleosts.
