It is possible that the synthesis is more active in the icefish than in other
fish. In the hemoglobin-free fish, blood volume and cardiac output are
several fold greater than in the red-blooded species, to compensate for'the
reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood [23]. SDS-PAGE of heart
homogenates from Champsocephalus gunnari [24] revealed a band whose
electrophoretic mobility resembled that ofrANP. Western immunoblotting,
using the rabbit antisera to rANP, showed that the band at that position was
conjugated with the corresponding antibody (Fig. 3).
