- the shape of antenna 2, ending in short spine
(Cohen, 1992: Fig. 12).
- the presence of a pair of small verrucose bosses
(not mentioned by Cesar, 1987) on the 3rd and 4th
thoracic segments (Cohen, 1992: Fig. 13).
- the extension of the ovaries up to the 5th or 6th
abdominal segments (according to Cesar, 1987, up
to 3rd or 4th abdominal segments).
- the shape and extension of the brood pouch up to
the 7th abdominal segment (Cohen, 1992: Fig. 14).
Males and females of both sets of material bear:
- cuticular granulations, more conspicuous on some
parts of the body such as the abdominal segments
(not observed by Cesar, op. cit.).
- phyllopods: in the 10 forward pairs, branchial
sac with smooth edge and branchial lamina with
serrated edge and without marginal notch. In the
male, endopodites of the 1st to 3rd pairs triangular, sharp-pointed (Cohen, 1992: Fig. 7). Cesar
(1987) described the endopodites of the 1st to 4th
pairs as subtriangular, and pointed out that this
lobe is less acute in the female than in the male;
however the description disagrees with her figures
of the 1 st pair of thoracic legs in both the male
and the female (Cesar, op. cit., Figs. 12 and 13,
respectively). These seem interchanged as occurs
with Figs. 16 and 17: op. cit. and Fig. 5: 3 and
6: Cesar (1985). The endopodite of the 4th to the
11 th pairs of legs are less sharp-pointed to oval. In
the female, the endopodite is uniformly subsquare
trough out the series of legs (Cesar, 1985; Cohen,
1992: Fig. 10).
- The number of anterior setae on endites 3 to 5,
in pairs 2 to 11, within the values stated by Linder (1941) for the genus; however, in the first leg
these values differ between both sets of material
and from Linder's data (Linder, op. cit.). According to Cesar (1985) both sexes bear 2, 2, and 6
anterior setae on endites 3 to 5 respectively. In the
Facundo population, there are 3, 6, and 7 anterior
setae in the male and 3 to 4, 6 to 7, and 8 to 9
anterior setae in the female (Cohen, 1992).
In the types of B. santacrucensis, I observed two small
elevations at the sides of the naupliar eye (not described
by Cesar, 1987) that resemble those mentioned by
Daday (1902) in his description of the male of B. granulosa. In the Facundo population, these structures are
absent.
The number of aesthetascs on antenna 1, and of
setae on maxila 2 in both sexes of the Facundo material (Cohen, 1992) disagrees with those mentioned by
Cesar (1987).
Discussion
Cesar (1987) pointed out: 'En Branchinecta granulosa Daday, 1910 (sic) (de Amenkelt, Santa Cruz)
However,
the proximal inner tubercle of the basal article of male
antenna 2, is quite similar between the holotype and the
Facundo specimens. The finger-like projection of the
same article that this author mentions corresponds to
the spinelike or blunt medial process mentioned above;
the spiny area, corresponds to the spiny crest, that in
some specimens takes the shape of a semicircular area
on account of a deformation of the cuticle. The great
resemblance between the type specimens of B. santacrucensis and those from near Facundo, suggest that
they belong to the same taxonomic entity; unfortunately, as it was discussed in Cohen (1992: 201), the type
specimens of B. granulosa are in very poor condition,
preventing comparison. However, besides the other
similarities mentioned above, tbe features of the male
antenna 2, the presence of integumentary granulations,
and the presence of 2 small mounds at the sides of
the naupliar eye (in the Coyle population) agree with
Daday's (1902) description and over come Linder's
objections (1941) concerning tbe identity of B. granulosa. Therefore, B. santacrucensis Cesar should be
considered a synonym of B. granulosa Daday.
