drobiosis. Most soil inhabitants have continuous generations, and aestivation
occurs in the egg stage or during moulting, while suppressed metabolism leading to quiescence is imposed below certain threshold temperatures in winter.
It seems plausible that being able to conform to predictable seasonal cycles
may be more important for species dominance than per se values of demographic parameters. In most cases, the rate of population increase is not
directly linked to species dominance in the field. As a mater of fact, Iatrou and
Stamou (1991) combined field and laboratory data and compiled a life table
for the dominating millipede on Hortiatis, G. balcanica (Table 5.3). Far
higher mortality is exhibited among immature individuals than among those
in reproductive stages in which mortality is low. The overall result is that the
