• • Procedure
1. Surface sterilize the animal.
2. Remove the septa (Fig. 2), and cut it into small pieces.
1. Transfer the tissue fragments to culture dishes.
2. Add culture medium .
• • Results
Lewis (1916) cultured pieces of the septa. The explants gave rise to an
abundant growth, which was composed of substances that were probably mesogloea and numerous scattered endoderm cells. The cilia along
the edge of the septa remained active for many days in the culture.
