The Management of Eutrophicated Waters
73
Workshop on Production and Exploitation of Entire Seaweeds (St. Malo,
France 1991). One third of its activities centered on eutrophication. Besides some concrete recommendations for research on the effects of
uncontrolled eutrophication [ ... ] on benthic primary biomass and the
possibility of eutrophication [ ... ] abatement by controlled harvesting or
selective advancement (Schramm 1994a) six papers discussed the phenomenon. A brief overview (Fletcher 1994a) preceded an assessment of
the situation on the Britanny coasts viewing nitrogen as an inhibitor
(Dion 1994), an element also discussed for the Gulf of Thessaloniki
(Kotropoulos et aL 1994), in the Western Baltic where since 1970 it has
entrained a change in macrophytic vegetation (Schramm 1994b), and in
the [Dutch] Veerse Meer (Nienhuis 1994). A practical suggestion for
relief is presented by Merrill by mariculture which could possibly reduce
eutrophication effects (1994).
This author once wrote, simultaneously cynical and discouraged, that
coastal erosion is here to stay for any foreseeable future. The same can
be said for eutrophication and, par consequence, algal proliferation.
Hence, there is a need for a management approach that covers extensive
geographical surfaces and is integrated in the broader overall coastal
zone management plan.
