changed dramatically over the past 20 years, and as a result the marine
flora is in great danger.
The problems we are currently facing are:
1. Qualitative and quantitative decrease in the marine algal flora and the
marine phanerogams.
2. Many species have disappeared from the Gulf, others have prevailed
(Ulva rigida, even on soft bottoms).
3. Wet biomass of the biological indicators has increased (only Chlorophyceae).
4. Nitrate, phosphorus and other nutrients are now in abundance in the
Gulf.
5. It is too early to conclude that the sewage treatment plant of the city
Thessaloniki, which has been in operation since the beginning of
1992, has had a positive effect on the ecosystem of the Gulf.
