system to such pollution. In the Mediterranean, there is chronic pollution that is often undetected. This situation is broken irregularly in an
unpredictable way by episodic events. The study of such events would be
the most effective approach for the future. There is also an urgent need
to continuously monitor Mediterranean ecosystems, looking at the disturbances produced by chronically increasing pollution.
Concepts of pollution level and sensitivity of Mediterranean ecosystems are different from the Atlantic coasts, and future efforts should
focus on the study of the actual interacting effects between environmental conditions and ecosystem structure in Mediterranean systems. Weare
convinced that the extrapolation of critical conditions standardized in
Atlantic systems are not valid for the Mediterranean system.
Acknowledgments. We would like to thank E. Ballesteros, F. Boisset,
F. Conde, T. Gallardo, A. G6mez-Garreta, and M.A. Ribera for the
valuable information on green algal proliferations. Part of this work
