The upward movement varies considerably on different parts of the coastline and,
indeed, as can be seen from the surface temperature distribution, "centres" of particularly
intense upwelling appear to occur at the Kuria Muria Islands and Ras Madraka
(Figs. 4 and 8).

c) Biological Events
The effects of the SE Arabian upwelling on the biology of the region can be seen in
Fig. 9 which shows the average concentration of dissolved inorganic P04 3 --P, chlorophyll a in the particulate matter, and zooplankton biomass in the upper 100 m of the
water column. On the left of the figure the observations shown are from the 5 lines of
stations of the "Discovery" survey of July- August, 1963. These are arranged in
sequence from the bottom of the figure upwards, in progression north-eastwards along
the Arabian coast. On the right-hand side of the figure, the third section is shown again
with the repeated observations on the same section in March and May, 1964.
