f) Subarea VI: Southern Persian Gulf
37 stations, 32 HLN standard hauls, 7 RT hauls.
The southern part of the Persian Gulf is characterized by fish larvae of the family
Gobiidae and Apogonidae which were found at 84% and 65% respectively at all stations.
No less than 47 different species were caught in this part of the Gulf and the number
of species per station ranged from 0 to 26 (average 9.2). The samples were less diverse
than the samples off tropical East Africa but more diverse than off India and in the
Gulf of Oman.

g) Subarea VII: Northern Persian Gulf
31 stations, 6 HLN standard hauls, 23 RT hauls.
In the northern Persian Gulf besides gobies, fishes of the family Clupeidae and
Pomadasyidae were dominant. Pomadasyidae occurred at 91 % of all stations, herring-like
larvae at 80% and gobies at 69%. The differences in the samples which originated from
further south may have been due to the sampling technique. For the very shallow stations
in the northern Persian Gulf, vertical tows were not efficient, so the R T was mainly used;
it was towed horizontally at a depth of about 3 m. The total number of species caught
near the surface was 33, 2-22 at one station, average 11.3. The diversity was similar to
that in the southern part of the Gulf:

The short descriptions of the 7 subareas which were found to be different in respect
@f the fish larvae fauna include only the very common fish families which occurred at
more than 65% of all stations in a subarea. For more detail, Fig. 3 gives a summary of
the frequency with which larvae of all fish families were caught. Only 28 of the total
of 107 families occurred at 50% or more of all stations in one or several of the subareas.
By far the most common forms belonged to families Gonostomidae, Myctophidae,
Labridae and Nomeidae and were found in mainly oceanic areas. The common neritic
elements in nearshore and shelf zones were apogonids, carangids, and gobies. Bregmacerotidae larvae were found everywhere.
Fig. 4 a - i shows the distribution of fish larvae of the more common families.
