Cumacea of the Indian Ocean
c. V. KURIAN
The cumacea are essentially benthic forms which live in the bottom deposits. They
are rarely caught in plankton hauls. The cumacea dealt with here were obtained from
54 stations in the Indian Ocean and adjacent regions collected during the IIOE (19611965) in plankton nets and in the benthos samples.

The specimens III the plankton collections were received from the Indian Ocean
Biological Centre (IOBC) after being sorted out from the samples taken by the Indian
Ocean Standard net (IOSN) from 200 m to 0 m. Of the 1927 plankton samples in the
IOBC, only 11 samples showed the presence of cumacea. Altogether 28 specimens
have been separated. This number seems very low compared to the number of specimens
which are usually observed in the surface plankton samples collected from the inshore
